• Project Name: Removal of Old Generator - Bandel TPP, West Bengal

Case overview

As part of modernizing old Power plants, the West Bengal Power Development Corporation Limited decided to replace a 210MW Generator Stator at their Bandel power plant. The Entire EPC work for this job was awarded to Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Company, Korea.

Clients’ Predicament:

The removal of the old generator and installation of the new generator was not feasible through crane due to the confined space. Also, since the loading/unloading bay at a distance of more than 20 metres from TG deck, therefore, the Client required a customized lifting system with long span girders for this replacement.

Our Competence

We proposed a customized lifting system wherein we used our low height Mega lift Strand jack Sytem of 400MT capacity, in combination with our long span heavy duty Girders of 2m depth. The 31.4m Girders spanned the distance of 20m of loading/unloading bay with the TG Deck foundation.  The old Generator measuring 6.7m x 4.47m x 4.32m and weighing 180 MT was lifted and skidded toward the unloading bay. The generator was then lowered just above the ground level through the unloading bay. The width of the bay was only 7.5m and the generator of 6.7m length was rotated by 90so that it could be placed on the axles and taken away.  The new generator was brought in after few days and the same was lifted, rotated, cleared above the TG Deck Elevation, skidded and placed on to its foundation. This highly critical shutdown job was completed as per the schedule given by the client.
